1. Who we are
Korea Bike Route is developed and operated by Ignored Society, the studio of Richard Bryson, an individual developer (“we”, “us”). For any privacy question or request, email michinmigugin@gmail.com. Richard Bryson is also the person responsible for personal information and location information.
2. Summary
- The app records your bike ride on your phone. You can use the map, stamps and routes without an account.
- If you sign in, your ride data syncs to Google Firebase. Rides are private by default. Others see your ride only if you share a ride code or link with them, or switch your ride to Public.
- Privacy zones (for example, around your home) and SOS contacts are stored only on your phone and are never uploaded. Inside a privacy zone, your position is removed before anything is uploaded.
- We do not sell your data. The app currently shows no ads and contains no advertising or analytics SDK.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Account information
You can sign in with Kakao Login, Google Sign-In, or an email address and password. Accounts are managed by Firebase Authentication (Google). Depending on the method, we receive a user ID and your email address, display name and profile photo address (URL).
- Kakao Login: the app sends the Kakao access token to our small sign-in service (hosted on Cloudflare Workers). That service checks the token with Kakao and returns a Firebase sign-in token together with your Kakao nickname and profile photo URL.
- Google Sign-In: we receive your Google account name, email address and profile photo URL through Firebase Authentication.
- Email and password: Firebase Authentication stores your email address and a protected form of your password. We never see your password.
Your rider name is chosen in this order: the nickname you set in Settings, your Kakao nickname, your Google name, the part of your email address before the “@”, or a generated handle. Set a nickname if you don’t want your account name shown. Your email address and username are kept in your private user record. If you create a ride sync key, the server stores only a one-way hash of it.
3.2 Location information
With your permission, the app uses your phone’s precise (GPS) and approximate location to show you on the map, measure distance, speed, time and elevation, give turn and stamp cues, find nearby places, show weather for where you are, and, only if you turn sharing on, share your ride with others.
Background location during a ride: when you start a ride, the app runs a location foreground service with a persistent notification. This keeps tracking your ride while the screen is off or you are using another app, so your distance, route and safety alerts stay accurate. Tracking in the background stops when you end the ride.
When you are signed in and riding, the app uploads ride data to Firebase: position, accuracy, heading, a short recent trail, speed, distance, ride time, elevation, the route and next stamp, stamps checked, ride notes and phone battery level. This raw copy can be read only by you. A filtered copy is published for your viewers following your share settings. By default viewers see it after a 30-minute reporting delay, unless you give a viewer live access.
3.3 Privacy zones (stored only on your phone)
You can set a home privacy zone and other zones (work, school, family, custom places). Each zone is a circle of 1 to 10 km whose centre is deliberately offset from the real place. Zones are stored only in encrypted storage on your phone and are never uploaded. While you are inside a zone, and until you are 200 m past its edge, the phone uploads no live position, heading or trail point. Hazard reports and photos located inside a zone are not uploaded. Shared ride copies keep only the points outside your zones, and their distance and time are recalculated from that shorter trail. A destination inside a zone is never shown to viewers.
3.4 Ride records, stamps and photos
If you are signed in, your stamp checks, notes, ride history (start and end time, distance, route) and stamp photos sync to your private area in Firebase. You can add a stamp photo with the camera or from your gallery. The camera is used only when you choose to take a photo. Before upload, all photo metadata (EXIF), including GPS, is removed. The stamp location and time are stored alongside the photo. Photos are stored in Firebase Storage.
3.5 Messages, reactions and gifts
Riders and their approved viewers can exchange messages (up to 480 characters), cheers, polls and votes, suggested places, reaction emoji and free virtual gifts. Each item is stored on that ride with the sender’s user ID, display name, content and time. Reactions and virtual gifts are deleted when the ride ends. The “Send a real gift in KakaoTalk” button only opens KakaoTalk Gift (or gift.kakao.com). The purchase happens in KakaoTalk, and we receive no payment or order information.
3.6 Hazard reports, place reports and safety alerts
- Hazards: when you report a hazard (for example a pothole, construction, flooding, or a request for bike help), we store its type, location, time, your user ID and display name. Other signed-in users can see hazards on the map and vote “still there” or “not there”. Votes are stored with the voter’s user ID. A hazard stops being shown after its expiry time.
- Place reports: corrections you send about a place are stored with your user ID and can be read only by you and us.
- Safety alerts: when you check a stamp, when a possible-fall check-in goes unanswered, or when you send an alert, an alert with a short text and your position (removed inside privacy zones) is sent to your viewers. You can exclude viewers from alerts.
3.7 SOS contacts (stored only on your phone)
You can save up to three emergency contacts (name and Korean mobile number). They are stored only in the app’s storage on your phone and are never uploaded to our servers. “Pick from contacts” opens Android’s contact picker, and the app receives only the one number you pick. The app has no permission to read your contact list. When you use SOS, the app only shows emergency numbers and your contacts. Tapping one opens your phone’s dialer, SMS app or KakaoTalk with the number or a help message (including your coordinates and a Kakao Map link) filled in. Nothing is called or sent until you press Call or Send yourself.
Note: if Android backup is turned on, Android may include app settings stored on your phone, such as SOS contacts, in your own device backup. Privacy zones use encryption keys that stay on the phone.
3.8 Crash reports
If the app crashes, a crash report (app version, device model, Android version and the technical error) is saved on your phone. It is shared only if you tap Share and choose an app to send it with. The app does not automatically send crash reports or analytics.
3.9 What we do not collect
We do not read your contact list, call history or text messages. We do not collect advertising identifiers or use analytics or advertising SDKs. Heart-rate sharing is not available until a watch connection is added.
4. How sharing works
- Private (default): only viewers you approve can watch. A viewer joins with your ride code or a share link (
https://kbr.onewow.net/w/…). You choose which items each viewer sees (location, speed, distance, ride time, stamps, notes, photos, battery and more) and can block a viewer. - Public: your ride card (name, profile photo, route, ride stats and a general area such as a district) appears in the public riders list, which anyone can open in the app or the web viewer, even without signing in. Your map position is listed only if you also turn on “nearby riders”, which is off by default.
- KakaoTalk share: sharing a ride to KakaoTalk sends a card with your ride link and code. If a shared position is available, the card includes a map thumbnail image from Yandex Static Maps centred on your last shared (delayed, privacy-zone-filtered) position. Kakao fetches that image when the card is shown. You choose the recipients in KakaoTalk.
5. Service providers and third parties
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not give it to third parties for their own marketing. We use these providers to run the app:
| Provider | What it does | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Google LLC (Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, Hosting; Google Sign-In) | Accounts, ride sync and sharing, photos, website | Account data, ride and location data, photos, messages, hazards |
| Kakao Corp. | Kakao Login, KakaoTalk sharing, Kakao Maps, Kakao Local search (place and address search, district names), Kakao Mobility bike directions | Kakao login token and profile; map area; search text with nearby coordinates; route start and end points |
| Cloudflare, Inc. (Workers) | Hosts our Kakao sign-in token exchange | Kakao access token, Kakao user ID, nickname and photo URL (passed through to create your login) |
| OpenFreeMap; OpenStreetMap Foundation; CyclOSM | Map tiles in the app (OpenFreeMap), for offline map saving (OpenStreetMap) and in the web viewer (OpenStreetMap, CyclOSM) | Map area requested, IP address |
| FOSSGIS e.V. (routing.openstreetmap.de) | Backup bike routing when Kakao directions are unavailable | Route start and end points |
| Korea Meteorological Administration via the Public Data Portal (data.go.kr) | Weather forecast and weather warnings | Approximate location (5 km forecast grid) |
| Public Data Portal (data.go.kr) | Public restroom and public bike rental lists | No location is sent; results are filtered on the phone |
| Open-Meteo | Backup weather forecast and elevation | Coordinates |
| RainViewer | Rain radar map layer | Map area requested |
| Yandex (Static Maps) | Map thumbnail on KakaoTalk ride share cards | Last shared, delayed position (fetched by Kakao) |
Buttons that open Kakao Map, Naver Map, your phone dialer, SMS app or KakaoTalk hand the destination, number or message to that app only when you tap them. That app’s own privacy policy then applies. We may disclose information if required by law.
6. Where data is stored
Cloud Firestore data is stored in Google Cloud’s Seoul region (asia-northeast3). Firebase Authentication, Cloud Storage and Hosting are run by Google LLC and may process data in other countries, including the United States. Cloudflare and the map, routing and weather providers above may also process requests outside Korea. Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS) whenever you use those features.
7. Retention
- Data on your phone stays until you delete it, clear the app’s data, or uninstall the app.
- Account and synced ride data stay until you delete your account or ask us to delete them.
- Reactions and virtual gifts are deleted when the ride ends. Hazards stop being shown when they expire.
- After a deletion request, we delete your data within 30 days, unless a law requires us to keep something.
8. Deleting your account and your rights
You can delete your account in the app under Help & Settings → Account → Delete account, or by email. See how to delete your account and data. You can also ask us to access, correct, delete or stop processing your personal information by emailing michinmigugin@gmail.com. We will reply within 10 days. You can stop location collection at any time by ending your ride, turning off location sharing, or removing the app’s location permission in Android settings.
9. Children
Korea Bike Route is not directed at children under 14, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 14 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Security
Data is sent over HTTPS. Database and storage access rules let only you read your private ride data, and let only viewers you approve read your shared ride. Ride sync keys are stored only as hashes, privacy zones are encrypted on the phone, and photo metadata is removed before upload. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and keep your ride code private.
11. Advertising
The app currently shows no ads. Before ads are added, we will update this policy and the Google Play data safety information.
12. Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page with a new effective date and, for important changes, tell you in the app or on the Play Store listing.
